Templates define the structure of your content. By building a template, you ensure every piece of content your team produces is consistent and complete.
Templates are made up of tabs, and each tab has fields. See Understanding templates, components and repeatable fields for an overview of how structures work in CollectContent.
Creating a template
- Open the Structure: Select Structure in the project navigation.
- In the left-hand sidebar, select "Templates".
- Click the Create Template button in the top right.
- Give your template a name. You can optionally select a template blueprint for a pre-defined structure.
- Click the Create Template button.
Once a template has been created, you can edit the template straight away to add fields.
Editing a template
- Open the Structure: Select Structure in the project navigation.
- In the left-hand sidebar, select "Templates".
- Click the Template you wish to edit, or click the edit button .
- The template editor will open, allowing you add fields and make changes.
- When you're finished, click "Save Changes".
Good to know
You can edit a template, even if content items are using the template. New fields appear on existing items as empty and content from removed fields can be viewed in the version history.
Managing tabs
Tabs can be rearranged by dragging the tab.
You can also update the tab by clicking the settings button on the individual tab, followed by:
- The arrow buttons to move the tab left or right.
- The delete button to remove the tab.
- The tab name input to rename the tab.
Adding fields
On desktop devices, you can add a field by dragging a field from the left-hand sidebar into the template. On mobile devices, you can add a new field by clicking the "Add field" button and selecting a field.
Choose the field type you need and add it to the template. See Understanding field types for the full list of types.
The new field will be added to the active tab. Once you've added a new field give it a label, guidance and configure any options.
If a structure you're adding already exists as a component, for example a "Call to action" block used elsewhere, you can insert that component instead of rebuilding it from scratch. See Creating a component for how components work.
Repeat until you have all the fields you need.
Changing field settings
Each field has a variety of settings that can be configured. See Understanding field types for the full list of fields and settings.
You can update the settings of each field by clicking the settings button , for example whether a text field should allow rich-text formatting.
Rearranging fields
Fields can be rearranged by dragging the field or using the arrow buttons .
Fields can be moved to other tabs by dragging them to the tab or using the "Move to tab" button .
Saving a field as a component
You can save fields or groups as reusable components.
A component is a smaller, reusable group of fields you can insert into multiple templates. Instead of rebuilding the same set of fields every time a structure repeats, you define it once as a component and drop it into any template that needs it.
To save a field as a reusable component, click the settings button , followed by the save as component button .
Removing fields
Fields can be removed from the template by clicking the settings button , followed by the delete button .
